Gunby Hall and Gardens (see image on right) is a lovely homely country house dated 1700 set in Victorian walled gardens at the foot of the Lincolnshire Wolds, is only 15 minutes drive away from Greetham Retreat and well worth a visit.

With modest-sized rooms full of charm and character make it easy to imagine yourself thinking you could move in.

Tattershall Castle (see image on left) just 15 minutes drive from Greetham Retreat, is a magnificent 15th century medieval brick castle – what wealth and power looks like.  This castle proudly rises from the flat Lincolnshire fens; a survivor of conflict, decay and restoration.

Built of red brick in an era of stone this fortified manor is one of the earliest and finest surviving examples of English medieval brickwork.

A past home to lords, ladies, soldiers and cows, the castle was built by the Treasurer of England, Lord Ralph Cromwell and one of the most powerful men in the country in the 1440’s and saved for the nation by Lord Curzon of Kedleston in 1911.

Take the winding staircase, wander through vast echoing chambers and walk out onto the battlements revealing the beauty of the Lincolnshire countryside.

Belton House, near Grantham (image below right), is the ‘perfect’ English country house estate and is really worth a visiting.  It is around a one hour drive away from Greetham Retreat.

Built for Sir John Brownlow in the 1680s, Belton House has all the design features of a classic English country home.  Perfect symmetry, opulent décor, fine furnishings and Brownlow family portraits give Belton both grandeur and a more intimate feel while the ‘Below Stairs’ tours give fascinating insights into how Belton’s servants lived and worked in the 1900s.

This 17th century English country house is set in delightful gardens with include formal Italian and Dutch gardens and a fantastic historic 1300 acre deer park, Belton is often cited as the quintessential English country house estate.

The estate also includes a restaurant, café and indoor play area, gift and garden shops and the recently restored outdoor adventure playground.

A variety of events run throughout the year for visitors to enjoy, these include open air theatre and cinema, expert walks and talks, and Hallowe’en and Christmas programmes.

Belton is open every day of the year except December 25. The mansion is open Wednesday to Sunday between 12 March and 30 October.  Basement tours run daily.

Woolsthorpe Manor (image below left), is the birthplace and family home of Sir Isaac Newton and it will take you just over an hour drive their from Greetham Retreat.

Isaac Newton was born in this modest manor house in 1642 and he made many of his most important discoveries about light and gravity here in the plague years of 1665-6.

As well as his ground-breaking scientific work, Newton went on to roles as diverse as a Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, President of the Royal Society and Master of the Royal Mint.

The Manor House, his family home, is furnished as a 17th-century farmhouse might have been at this time. You can still see the famous apple tree that inspired his thoughts on gravity from the bedroom window, and explore some of his ideas for yourself in the Science Discovery Centre.

Grantham House National Trust property (image below right), is a handsome town house, with architectural features from various eras and riverside walled garden, which is an hours drive from Greetham Retreat.

Please note… Grantham House is open by appointment only with lessee, Wednesdays and Thursdays, April to October, 2 to 5 (appointments not required in June). The property is leased by the National Trust and the lessee is responsible for all arrangements and facilities. Entrance via gates opposite Church Street.
